Post rock veterans turned freewheeling ambient soundscapers Hualun, originally based out of Wuhan, have been quite prolific over the past fews years, releasing new material with various labels across the globe as well as soundtracking high-profile films and documentaries, including the soul-crushing An Elephant Sitting Still. Their latest Tempus, released with Bie Records, once again finds the band stretching their wings, jumping into a sandbox of post rock, krautrock, IDM, and more with playful ingenuity and melodic precision. Disorienting, bewitching, and full of the band’s shapeshifting tastes - it’s Hualun operating at the highest level.

SHAO - ECHO回声
In many ways Echo sees SHAO maneuvering between his two halves - the no frills minimalist techno junkie who haunts warehouse raves across the country, and the more ambient leaning sound explorer looking for a piece of mind amongst the sonic static. And while conceptional it doesn’t have the oomph his releases from last year have had, it’s by far the his most accessible release yet - the perfect introduction into the juggernaut producer’s aesthetic (including a supple live recording of his Tresor-ready jam Reflection). It’s at its best when it lets it’s meditative lens slip into it’s more kinetic numbers, adding depth and resonance to the dance floor.

Lumi刘敏 - A Day without Time
Lumi刘敏 - best known as the bassist, keyboardist, and singer of seminal rock outfit Re-TROS - goes solo on A Day without Time. Following in the band’s more experimental tendencies, the release finds Lumi exploring new sonic avenues - honing in on something more melodic yet the same time oozing with an atmosphere I can only describe as crystalized - vibrant, compact, yet delicate to the touch. Muffled drum beats, sharp synths lines, and an imaginative collage-like sense of sampling - it’s essentially Re-TROS dialed all the way back - and that ain’t at all a bad thing.
